Alessandra Rombolá

Free lance musician involved in different aspects of music making.

A classical trained flutist, she is interested in modern, contemporary and experimental music: new “notated” music by contemporary composers, graphic scores, sound installations and free improvisation.

She collaborates with dancers, soud poets, plastic and video artists, demonstrating great versatility and creative skills both as interpreter and as improviser.

She is mainly specialized in the “extended techniques” of the flute, with the intent of exploring the contemporary music languadge and developing her own musical identity.

Born in Catanzaro (Italy) in 1973, she began her studies at the Conservatoire of her hometown Vibo Valentia and graduated in 1993 at the Conservatoire “G. Verdi”, in Cuneo. In 1998 she received the Postgraduate Certificate in Performance and the following year the Master in Performance and Related Studies from Trinity College of Music, London.

Based in Madrid since 2000, she has collaborated with different groups and ensembles such as “Escuela Reina Sofía” Orchestra, the Ensemble “Cosmos XXI”, the Flute Ensemble “E-Wave”, “Proyecto Guerrero”, “Plural Esnsemble”, “OperaNova”, “Ensmble Madrid” etc…

She has performed as interpreter and improviser in different festivals such as “Festival de Otoño 2003”, Festival Internacional de Improvisación “Hurta Cordel”, Festival Internacional de Improvisación “¡Escucha!”, No Spaghetti Edition Festival”, Ciclo “Música de Hoy” , “Festival de Música de Alicante 2007”, “X Jornadas de Música Contemporánea de Córdoba” , "Influx" in Toulouse, "Imprudances" in Paris, Festival "Irtjial" in Beirut, etc...

She has been working with some of the most significant musicians in the European scene of improvisation: in duo with the saxofonist Michel Doneda, trio with the percussionist Ingar Zach and accordeonist Esteban Algora, with her stable trio MUTA (Ingar Zach, Rhodry Davies), and again in different combinations with Wade Matthews, Xavier Charles, Ivar Grydeland, Mary Cruz Planchuelo, Valeríe Metiviér, Ly Thanh Tiên etc…always combining music, moviment, Electronic, video etc.

A respected interpreter, se has premiered works by Mauricio Sotelo, Juan Manuel Artero, Dai Fujikura, Daryl Runswick, Bruno Dozza, Arild Suárez.

As a teacher she dedicates to the flute pedagogy: Since September 2006 she has been appointed Flute Professor and she is currently teaching at the Conservatoire “Victoria de los Ángeles” of Madrid. On top of teaching the flute she gives classes and courses combining the teaching of new thecniques and free improvisation.

She has recorded for the labels: Confront, Teñidos, Sillón (solo flute) and Another Timbre and Al Maslakh.
